If you have children, there are additional considerations that go into your estate planning. If your children are still minors, for example, it is critical that you designate one or more people to act as the guardian(s) for your children in the event you are unable to do so. Depending on the life stage that each of your children has reached, you may also find that it is important to craft different distribution plans for each child. Furthermore, if any of your children has special needs and/or is the recipient of any public benefits, special planning may be required so that your child will receive ongoing support throughout her or his life. Finally, if you are a same-sex couple, it may be necessary to take additional steps to insure that you are both recognized as the legal parent of your children.
